Adaptive News, Issue 13: The AI on your staff laptops leaves no network trail

ADAPTIVE IP SERVICES
Adaptive News
Field notes for growing businesses
Issue 13 · November 2026

Three items this month: shadow AI running on your own laptops, what the latest UK breach survey says about businesses your size, and what retailers actually put on their screens. Each one with a straight answer on what to do.

The AI on your staff laptops leaves no network trail
FROM THE PRESS • Backslash
Local Model Discovery: Govern Shadow AI | Backslash

Backslash describes the hardest form of shadow AI to catch: a model downloaded and run directly on a company laptop. Inference happens locally, so there is no vendor account, no API key, and no outbound traffic for network or cloud monitoring to see. Its new Local Model Discovery scans the model directories of tools like Ollama, LM Studio, Jan, GPT4All and llama.cpp on macOS and Windows, then applies the same allow and deny policies used for cloud models.

The Adaptive Take

Finding the models is the easy half. People run a model on their own laptop for a reason, usually that they will not paste client files into a public chatbot, and a deny list alone pushes that work onto personal machines where you cannot see it at all. Pair the inventory with a sanctioned option. Adaptive Reservoir is a private, governed AI your organization runs on-prem or in the cloud, with your data staying under your control. Decide what the approved path is before you start blocking the unapproved ones.

02
SECURITY
Small firms are not attacked less. They notice less.
FROM THE PRESS • Ais
What It Means for Small Businesses

The UK government's Cyber Security Breaches Survey, based on Ipsos interviews with 2,112 businesses, reports that 46% of small businesses with 10 to 49 staff identified an attack or breach, against 65% of medium ones. The authors tie part of that gap to monitoring: 38% of small businesses used any security monitoring tool, compared with 56% of medium businesses. Phishing hit 40%. Only 36% have a formal incident response plan.

The Adaptive Take

The figure to sit with is 36%, because a plan is what you reach for late on a Friday when a mailbox starts sending invoices. Most small firms already pay someone for IT and then assume that means someone is watching after hours. Ask your provider directly who sees an overnight alert and what they are allowed to do about it. Adaptive's SOC covers endpoint and network telemetry with AI-triaged alerts and expert response, and Foyer lets staff run approved fixes without shared admin credentials.

03
DIGITAL SIGNAGE
Retail screens run on playlists, and playlists need someone tending them
FROM THE PRESS • Yodeck
Digital Signage Impact No. 4: Retail digital signage statistics 2026

Yodeck looked at anonymized usage from 5,761 retail organizations between September 18, 2025 and September 18, 2026. Playlists appear on 74% of active retail screens, images on 67% and video on 43%. Date and Time is the most used app, followed by three weather apps. Separately, its Insights survey reports customers claiming more than a 25% increase in sales of promoted products and at least 10 hours per week saved updating promotional content.

The Adaptive Take

Note what is missing from that list: Emergency Alerts sit at 12% of active retail screens. The screen above your counter is the fastest way to reach everyone in the building, and almost nobody sets that up until the day they need it. The other thing the data does not show is who keeps the playlist current once the launch is over. Our Basic plan is cloud signage managed remotely, Pro covers governed content at scale, and Adaptive Solo runs one screen on a single PC with no cloud account if you want to start small.
