Field notes for growing businesses
Issue 05 · September 2026

Three items this month: where private AI actually pays off, why ransomware keeps landing on businesses your size, and what augmented reality is doing to restaurant menus. Each one comes with a straight answer on what to do next.

01
ON-PREM AI + IT CONSULTING
Private AI is an architecture decision, not a hardware purchase.
FROM THE PRESS • Aimec
Local and Private AI for Business: The Complete Guide to Self-Hosted AI

The guide separates local, private, on-premise and self-hosted AI, then argues the real question is which workloads belong in your own environment and which stay in the cloud. Running an open model yourself does not automatically make the system cheaper or safer: you still need infrastructure, model selection, GPUs, security and maintenance. Most businesses end up hybrid, with sensitive retrieval and classification handled privately and harder reasoning routed out.

The Adaptive Take

The article treats this as an infrastructure decision. The part that gets skipped is permissions. A retrieval system will answer from whatever sits in the index, so salary files and old contracts become searchable by anyone who can ask a question, and nobody notices until it is quoted back at them. Sort out document scope and access before you buy a GPU. Adaptive Reservoir is a private, governed AI your organization runs, on-prem or in the cloud, so your data stays under your control while your knowledge compounds.

02
SECURITY
96 percent of ransomware victims are small and medium businesses.
FROM THE PRESS • Bigband
Ransomware and SMBs: Why Small Businesses Are the Target

Verizon's 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report found 96 percent of ransomware victims were small and medium businesses. Ransomware appears in 48 percent of all breaches overall and in 88 percent of small business breaches, against 39 percent at large organisations. The survivors are the ones who refused to pay: 69 percent did, and what they had in common was reliable, tested backups that attackers could not reach.

The Adaptive Take

Everyone agrees on testing restores; almost nobody books the window to do it. The other thing that quietly decides your recovery is volume. Restore time tracks the amount of data you have to move, and the offline copy is where storage budgets run out, so retention gets trimmed instead. Adaptive Compression is managed dedup and compression for backups and archives: we assess your data, implement it on hardware you already own, and hand it over, priced as a one-time project. Our SOC covers the detection side, with endpoint and network telemetry, AI-triaged alerts and expert response.

03
DIGITAL SIGNAGE
AR menus move from demo booth to ordinary restaurant tooling.
FROM THE PRESS • Dev
AR in Restaurants: Use Cases That Drive Revenue | dev.family

The piece walks through four restaurant uses for augmented reality: menus, visual upselling, staff training and marketing. WebAR is now the common path, since a diner scans a QR code and the browser opens with no app download. Kabaq, a vendor, reports average order value increases of 20-26% in the first 90 days across its operator network. SaaS setup typically runs $1,500-5,000.

One thing to plan for: every menu change means a new 3D scan. AR does not remove the content job, it adds a production step with a per-dish cost, and the specials board is exactly the part that changes most often. It also depends on the guest picking up a phone. A screen you own reaches everyone in the room without asking anything of them, and you control what it says. Adaptive Digital Signs runs from Starter to Gold, with Silver built for governed content at scale.
