Three items this month: what outages actually cost, whether local AI can be audited, and where ransomware money is going. Each one ends with the practical step, not the trend.

SMALL BUSINESS IT
Most downtime is preventable, but only if someone is watching.

The Adaptive Take
Monitoring tells you something is wrong. It does not fix it. The step that gets skipped is deciding in advance who is allowed to act after hours and with what credentials, because the default answer is to hand out a shared admin password and hope. Adaptive's NOC is a managed Network Operations Center: continuous monitoring of the devices and links your business runs on, with alerting before things break. Foyer is the companion piece, where your IT staff run specific approved actions, password resets, DNS changes, vulnerability remediation, without shared admin credentials or root.

You cannot audit a model you do not control.

Sovereign AI: Why Running Models Locally May Be the Only Way to Truly Audit
A study in Results in Engineering argues an organization cannot audit AI it does not control. On a 50-question benchmark, cloud-hosted Gemma-3 27B hit 90 percent accuracy and DeepSeek R1 78 percent, while local Llama models reached 60 percent and 46 percent. Both cloud models scored zero on risk assessment capability; both local models scored the full 1.0. Self-hosting ran roughly 11,635 dollars per year at 1,000 queries per day.

The Adaptive Take
The study measures sovereignty against the vendor. It says nothing about sovereignty inside your own building. Once the model sits on your hardware, every employee who can reach it can ask it anything the index contains, and that is a different problem from the one the paper solves. Adaptive Reservoir is a private, governed AI your whole organization runs, on-prem or in the cloud, so your data stays under your control while your knowledge compounds. Before you buy hardware, write down who gets to ask what. That decision is cheaper to make first.

SECURITY
Ransomware appeared in 48% of breaches in Verizon's 2026 DBIR.

FROM THE PRESS • Mangothrive
117 Ransomware Statistics for 2026
Verizon's 2026 DBIR found 48% of breaches involved ransomware, up from 44% the year before. Sophos puts the median ransom payment at $769,000 and the mean cost to recover, excluding ransom, at $1,700,200. In Sophos' survey, 26% of attacks started with a malicious email and 24% with phishing. Check Point counted 2,139 victims posted on leak sites in Q2 2026, up 33% from Q2 2025.

The Adaptive Take
Phishing is how they get in. It is not how they encrypt an entire network. That takes a privileged account, and in most small companies a single shared admin password is reused across every server, so a compromised mailbox becomes everything. The part that gets skipped is pulling standing admin rights out of daily work. Adaptive's SOC is a managed Security Operations Center: endpoint and network telemetry, AI-triaged alerts, and expert response. Foyer keeps privileges out of shared accounts, since your IT staff run specific approved actions without shared admin credentials or root.
