Field notes for growing businesses
Issue 07 · September 2026

Three items this month: what a sign actually does to a buying decision, what an outage costs before anyone notices it, and where local AI stops being a hardware question. Each one ends with what to do about it.

01
DIGITAL SIGNAGE
Your sign is doing sales work whether you maintain it or not
FROM THE PRESS • Prnewswire
The Sign Effect: New Survey Reveals 84% of Consumers Say Signage Directly Influences Their Purchase Decisions

The Harris Poll surveyed 2,007 US adults for Signarama. 84% say signage impacts their decision to purchase from a business, and 39% have entered one solely because of its sign. 41% have been unable to locate a business because its sign was difficult to read, and 17% chose not to enter because of the sign. 93% say signage affects whether they remember the business at all.

The Adaptive Take

A printed sign fails slowly. A screen fails visibly: last week's promotion still looping tells a customer something about how you run the place. Before you buy hardware, decide who owns the content calendar and who approves what goes up, because that is the job that gets skipped once the novelty wears off. Our signage tiers run from Starter, to get on-screen fast, through Silver for governed content at scale when more than one person is posting, and Gold for enterprise, around the clock. Pick the tier that matches how many hands touch the screen.

02
SMALL BUSINESS IT
The expensive part of an outage is the time before you notice
FROM THE PRESS • Tmcnet
New Relic Report Finds High-Impact IT Outages Drain $74 Million Annually from Businesses

New Relic surveyed 2,575 IT and engineering leaders and practitioners across 24 countries. The businesses surveyed lose an annualized $74 million to high-impact outages, down slightly from $76 million last year, and 36% say they are hit with one weekly or more. Average detection takes 41 minutes and average resolution takes 54 minutes. 42% still learn about disruptions through manual checks and customer complaints.

The Adaptive Take

Read the dollar figures as enterprise scale, not yours. The part that transfers is the detection gap: every minute before anyone notices is a minute nobody is working the problem, and in a smaller shop the first notice usually arrives as a phone call from a customer. That costs you twice, once in downtime and once in trust. Our NOC is continuous monitoring of the devices and links your business runs on, with alerting before things break, which moves the first notice off your customer and onto a screen someone is watching.

ON-PREM AI + IT CONSULTING
Keeping AI data local is the easy half of the job
FROM THE PRESS • Eric
The Case for Local AI: Keep Your Data and Your Models Close

A security-minded developer argues that the default AI pattern, serialize your data and POST it to someone else's computer, hands your retention, breach surface and terms-of-service risk to a vendor. Local inference removes the request entirely, drops the network round trip, and turns per-token metering into hardware you pay for once. His framing is local by default and cloud where capability genuinely demands it, since most applications find bounded tasks are 90% of the volume.

The Adaptive Take

The post is written for developers embedding inference in one application. A business has a different problem: everyone wants to ask questions of everything, and hardware on your own floor does not by itself decide who can see which document or keep a record of what was asked. Keeping the data on the box is the easy half. The half that gets skipped is access control and audit, and it is the half your counsel will ask about first. Adaptive Reservoir is a private, governed AI your whole organization runs, on-prem or in the cloud, with your data under your control.
